One of the advantages of diving from Ambergris Caye is how close the Belize Barrier Reef is to San Pedro. That means less time travelling and more flexibility when you simply want to get underwater.
Local Reef Diving from San Pedro
With the barrier reef directly offshore, Belize Pro Dive Center can offer local dives that are only a short boat ride from San Pedro. Whether you want to fit one dive into your morning or prefer a later start, the one-tank trip gives you an easy way to experience the reef without committing your entire day.
Morning dives depart at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM and are regularly scheduled without a minimum number of divers.
A 2:00 PM departure may also be available. Afternoon departures require a minimum of 4 divers to operate.
Dive sites are selected based on weather, conditions and where you have already dived, helping repeat guests experience something new.
What You'll Experience
Diving directly in front of San Pedro gives you the opportunity to explore the distinctive spur-and-groove canyons that run along the Belize Barrier Reef.
Before entering the water, your divemaster will give you a complete briefing covering the dive site, maximum depth, conditions and recommended bottom time. Once underwater, your guide leads you through the reef formations while pointing out coral and marine life.
Common sightings can include nurse sharks, turtles, rays, eels, groupers, snappers and a wide variety of Caribbean reef life. Dolphins are also occasionally encountered in the area.
Some of the canyon formations slope into considerably deeper water, creating the feeling of gliding from one reef formation to another. The dive itself is planned according to certification level, conditions and diver experience.
Our standard recreational dive ratio is up to six divers for each divemaster. Groups may be smaller depending on the number and experience level of guests.
